50km walk in support of
Breast Cancer Society of Canada
Why the charity?
In Canada, 1 in 8 women are expected to develop breast cancer during her lifetime and 1 in 33 will die of it. As such, this is clearly one of the most important diseases to try to eliminate or minimize the number of deaths. One thing I like about this charity is that part of the funding goes towards scholarships for people to continue their research and education.
On a personal level, in my life, two women in my family have been diagnosed not once, but numerous times with breast cancer.
With your help, we can raise additional money for research.
Currently, this is planned for 7am on March 27, 2021.
The map below shows the planned route.
The starting point is the parking lot at Shirley’s Bay. From there to the Chateau Laurier is 22km, then from Chateau Laurier to Petrie Island is 28km.
Why the feat?
There are a couple of reasons here.
Firstly, I needed something I know I can do and train for in the winter.
Secondly, even though the 50km walk will incredibly challenging, it is very much a mental AND physical feat since walking for such long distances requires a lot of mental focus and distraction. As such, this is great mental preparation for what follows in subsequent months.
Finally, I was inspired by the initiative called “Walk the Walk”, a charity event primarily in the UK in support of breast cancer research and awareness. I was hoping to piggy back on this with events in Canada, but sadly there was nothing, so I figured I would do my own walk.
