1 hour of continuous skipping as part of Jump Rope for Heart
Why the charity?
Since 1978, Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart have raised more than $1.3 billion for research and educational programs. Why is this so important?
The world’s leading cause of death is ischaemic heart disease, responsible for 16% of the world’s total deaths. Since 2000, the largest increase in deaths has been for this disease, rising by more than 2 million to 8.9 million deaths in 2019.
In Canada, historically heart disease has been leading cause of death, and this past year, was the second leading cause of death resulting in almost 60,000 deaths.
Thanks to organizations like The Heart and Stroke Foundation, the charity that runs the Jump Rope for Heart events, annual deaths from heart disease have decreased since a peak in the late 1980’s.
So ya… from a health perspective, this is arguably one of the most important causes to support.
Why the feat?
There is definitely some nostalgia here as I used to do Jump Rope for Heart every year in elementary school. I wasn’t very good at skipping then, and as I found out last year, I still wasn’t.
I took some boxing lessons and in the process had to skip. And boy oh boy was I absolutely terrible at it. I decided I couldn’t let myself be just so bad at something so over these past 9 months, I have been skipping numerous times a week.
That all being said, skipping continuously for 1 hour may not seem very difficult, until you try it. It’s one of those things where you feel like you could do it forever for the first few seconds, and then you hit a wall very suddenly.
Don’t underestimate how incredibly challenging this will be for me.
